The Devil's Dictionary X

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Devil's Dictionary X is a modern take on Ambrose Bierce's original The Devil's Dictionary, billing itself as "the Devil's Dictionary for the new millennium." As controversial as Bierce was in his day, there were many topics he could not satirize because they were considered complete cultural taboos. This left the door open for hundreds of words he left undefined, such as orgasm. Also described are several words, phrases and nouns that had not yet been conceived or put in popular use during Bierce's authorship of the original dictionary, such as AA (definitions below).

Like the infamous original dictionary, the "revised" version covers controversial topics from what is assumed as an offensive point of view, most often changing with the topic to suit the most offensive take on the subject. Often the definitions make use of oxymorons or irony. For all intents and purposes, the offensive content is satire and caricature, obviously intended to be humorous.

Available only online to date, The Devil's Dictionary X debuted in late 1998 with just over 100 definitions; at the time of its inception, it was titled "The Devil's Dictionary 2000." As of mid 2005 its term count has crept over 1,200, surpassing Bierce's published total.
