[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Sheppard and the team are surveying a planet on the opposite side of Atlantis' solar system. They find a defensive satellite in orbit, believing it to once have belonged to the Ancients. On further investigation, they find a Wraith ship on the surface of a planet that was shot down by the satellite thousands of years earlier. They land the Puddle Jumper on the surface to investigate.

Contrary to expectation that no Wraith could have survived thousands of years without food (humans), a Wraith is alive on the planet, and he proceeds to kill one of the scientists on the mission and drain another's life force. The Wraith finds the puddle jumper. Not possessing the Ancient gene, he cannot fly the ship but is able to activate the jumper's shields, thus hindering Sheppard's efforts to retake the craft.

Sheppard repeatedly attempts to retake the jumper, finding out in the process the wraith in question is a "super-wraith", having fed off of his own crew. He resists an entire P90 magazine, two 9mm clips, and a wraith explosive device (which power is equivalent to around 4 fragmentation grenades). Out of ammo, Sheppard destracts the wraith with a flare and tries a last ditch attempt and engages in an unsuccessful knife fight with the wraith.

While Sheppard tries to retake the jumper, McKay stays with Dr. Gaul. During that time, Gaul tries to persuade McKay to go help Sheppard. McKay refuses to leave so Gaul takes the decision out of McKay's hands by shooting himself.

Sheppard tries to distract and kill the Wraith again, but is unsuccessful. The Wraith is about to kill Sheppard when McKay shows up and distracts the Wraith by shooting it. Sheppard and McKay continue to distract the Wraith by alternating shooting at it until Ford and Teyla arrive in a second Puddle Jumper and are able to destroy the Wraith from space using a drone weapon.

[edit] Trivia

  • This episode was filmed at the Richmond sand dunes. [1]
  • This episode features what appears to be an energy-based life-form, yellow fireflies similar to those in Stargate SG-1 Season 4 episode "Prodigy", yet with noticeable differences. The significance of this, if any, is as yet unknown.
  • Richard Ian Cox previously appeared in the season 3 Stargate SG-1 episode 'New Ground' as Nyan.
  • This is the first episode to identify the Ancients as the "Lanteans".
