"The Debut" is the fourth episode of the FOX television series, The O.C.. The episode was written by Josh Schwartz and Allan Heinberg and was directed by Daniel Attias. It originally aired on Tuesday August 26, 2003.

At the Cohen’s, Sandy and Kirsten ask Ryan if he wants them to be his guardian. Ryan is delighted and agrees. But Ryan has to avoid problems as he is in a probation period and Child Services are watching him. It seems to be a difficult task for Ryan.

Kirsten, Ryan and Seth, at the pool house, discuss what they needed to buy for Ryan's permanent stay. It reminds Kirsten to buy a tuxedo, for cotillion. Cotillion is Newport's biggest event. It is for young ladies making their formal debut for the society. Ryan has to go because it is family tradition and Ryan is part of family. Marissa, along with her boyfriend Luke and her best friend Summer, meet Ryan at the fitting area who announces the news that he is staying in Newport. Summer asks Marissa, the lead debutante, to set her up with Ryan. Marissa denies that she is interested in Ryan.

On the other side, Jimmy thanks Sandy for the loan. Jimmy seems to be hiding something. An officer from the Securities and Exchange Commission's Enforcement Division asks Sandy at his office about the loan. Sandy knows from the officer that Jimmy stole money from clients to cover his debts and he tells this surprising news to Kirsten. Kirsten asks Sandy not to make it public until she asks Jimmy if it is true.

Ryan decides not to go to the cotillion because he does not want to cause trouble. But he changes his decision after helping Marissa fasten her dress.

Jimmy wants to defend his action but Kirsten tells him that he committed a crime. Julie cut in and asks which card should be used for new shoes and Marissa's tennis lesson, showing how he can not say no to his family. Kirsten says he needs help, but Jimmy wonders if someone will.

Ryan and Seth go to rehearsal. Ryan gets freaked out after finding out that he must dance at cotillion. Instead of Summer, Ryan is set up with Anna Stern, who is also a newcomer. Summer has to pair up with Seth.

Ryan and Anna don't know how to waltz. Marissa demonstrates how to dance with Ryan for Anna. There is obvious chemistry between Marissa and Ryan that even outsider Anna feels. Later Marissa invites Ryan to a party, although Luke shows his envy at the rehearsal. Ryan accompanies Seth, who wants to lock Summer up for cotillion. But Ryan ends up being beaten up by Luke for talking to Marissa.

Sandy rejects Kirsten's suggestion to represent Jimmy, and he criticises Jimmy as a spoiled kid. Holly’s father Greg asks Jimmy to pull $200,000 from his investment account, causing trouble for Jimmy.

Because of troubles between Ryan and Luke, both Marissa and Ryan plan not to go to cotillion. Sandy has the same decision, as he hates a society that treats Jimmy as a golden boy. But after she finds out Ryan did not go, Marissa asks if they go together. Sandy, hearing their decision, decides to be the driver.

Seth tells Anna Ryan is not coming, and they chat. They find out they have a lot in common. Summer blows Seth off for Luke, which upsets Seth. Anna comforts him and asks him to be her escort.

Ryan and Marissa arrive together. Luke is furious, breaks up with Marissa and leaves. Ryan asks if he can be Marissa's white knight and she agrees.

Cotillion finally begins. Everything is going right, until Greg confronts Jimmy and discovers Jimmy doesn't have his money. Greg is infuriated and attacks Jimmy. Greg shouts out to everyone in the ball that Jimmy is a thief.

The ball ends with chaos. Seth and Anna build up their friendship when Seth discovers that Anna is going to sail to Tahiti: Seth's lifelong dream. both like sailing. Marissa is very upset by the fact that Jimmy was beaten up. Luke goes back to mollify Marissa, but she needs some time alone.

[Seth loses]
Seth: So the pupil become the teacher.

Sandy: Hey guys.
Kirsten: Seth, we need to talk to Ryan.
Seth: Okay. If this has to do with the rug, though, I just wanted to tell you that Ryan had nothing to do with it.
Kirsten: What about the rug?
Seth: I'm gonna go now.

Seth: Dude. You're a Cohen now. Welcome to a life of insecurity and paralysing self-doubt.
Ryan: Now what I have to do is stay out of troubles.
Seth: Yea, it could be...difficult.
[Ryan sighs]

Sandy: Fellas, you mind?
Seth: Oh. Uh, if this is about the vase...
Sandy: Which vase?
Seth: Nothing. Let's go, Ryan.

Ryan: Dancing? You didn't tell me there was dancing.
Seth: Well if I told you there was dancing, I'd be here by myself right now.
Ryan: Because I really don't dance.
Seth: Neither do I. Just move well.
Seth: (Does a squiggly thing with his arms.)

Marissa: Hey guys. So, can I introduce you to your debs?
Summer: We have already met.
Marissa: Oh, well, actually, Summer, Ryan's already been promised to someone else.
Summer: I can't believe this. You gave him to someone else? Who? Who's pathetic enough not to have a date the day before cotillion?
Anna: Actually, at this point, that would be you.
Marissa: So, Anna Stern, that was Ryan Atwood. Guys, Anna just moved here from Pittsburgh.
Summer: Pittsburgh? Ew!

Summer: So, what am I supposed to do?
[Seth makes a noise to remind Summer of his existence]
Summer: Fine. Let's go.
Seth: Are you sure? Because if if if...
Summer: Just don't talk to me.
Seth: All right. I get it. Our connection’s a little bit deeper than words. That’s it. I’m done. I’m sorry. I’m chock full of quiet now.

Luke: [sees Ryan and Marissa dancing] I’d be pretty jealous right now. If Chino wasn’t gay.

Anna: Wait. Are you the kid from Chino that steals cars and sets people's houses on fire? So you're saying I'm making my debut into society with Newport's most wanted?
Ryan: Is that gonna be a problem?
Anna: I can't wait.

Holly: Yeah, it's at my house. I do it every year for cotillion.
Seth: You didn't do it last year.
Holly: Yeah we did.
Seth: ...Ouch.

Ryan: Yeah, I am not going.
Seth: Wait, dude, I don't want to go alone.
Ryan: Summer's gonna be there.
Seth: Yeah, oh I’m still going, I would just prefer not to go alone. Listen to me: we’re like brothers now, okay? That means we do stuff for each other. For instance, if you do this for me, somewhere down the line I’m going to be able to do something for you. I don’t know what it’s going to be yet, but it’s going to be awesome.

Seth: [to Holly] you know, you're a really...good barbecuetionist.

Seth: [to Ryan who was beaten by Luke] Wow. You just got your butt kicked and you didn't even fight back. Dude, you really are a Cohen.

Seth: Are you just not going to go 'cause you're afraid of Luke?
Ryan: That's not what I'm afraid of. Look, your parents taking me in, that's, like, the greatest thing that's ever happened to me. I'm not going to lose it just to kick some guy's ass.
Seth: But you could totally kick his ass, right?
Ryan: Oh, yeah.

Marissa: Look, Luke and I got in a fight last night, okay?
Julie: So you got into a fight. You've had fights before. You guys have been together forever.
Marissa: Maybe that's the problem. I mean, what if there's someone else out there?
Julie: Like who, that boy from Chino? Marissa, do you want to end up like your Aunt Cindy, with four kids in a trailer park? She broke my mother's heart. I will not let you break mine.
Marissa: Oh, so now this is about you?

Sandy: Wait. Which one’s Sword?
Ryan: At the one you are heading.
Sandy: Oh, got it.
Ryan: Okay, now you're stabbing me. Just don't touch any of the buttons, follow me through the forest, and, uh, maybe we'll both make it out of here alive.
Sandy: So you didn't feel like going huh?
Ryan: Yeah, no, not really for me.
Sandy: How could me more you?
Ryan: Guess I don’t really fit in, huh?
Sandy: Oh, I got news for you. Nobody does. I guarantee you--every single person at that cotillion feels like a fraud. They’ve all got secrets and they’re all terrified the guy next door is going to find them out.
Ryan: So, what’s your secret?
Sandy: Sometimes, when the sun’s coming up and the surf is good, and I haven’t pissed my wife off quite as much as I have today, I kind of like this place.
[they look at each other]
Ryan: You just stabbed me again.
Sandy: Oh, sorry.

Anna: I mean, whatever you think about the whole superhero movie genre, at least it's getting people to read the original source material.
Seth: I cannot believe that you read comic books. I mean, you're a girl.
Anna: What is that supposed to mean? And I call them graphic novels. In fact, if more people did, maybe the whole form wouldn't be so marginalized.
Seth: I couldn't agree more.

Sandy: Ryan! Come on, check this out! I have totally annihilated all the other ninjas!

Anna: Could you be any more pathetic? Lone figure, sitting on the floor, wondering if he's going to be lonely for the rest of his life.
Seth: Oh, hey, your sensitivity, it's really... nonexistent.
Anna: You know what your problem is? You're not a man.
Seth: Again, not appreciating the brutal honesty.
Anna: Do you know what girls find sexy?
Seth: Nope. Uh, wait, let me guess. Dudes who play water polo?
Anna: Confidence!

Sandy: Five hundred channels and nothing on.
Kirsten: You couldn't put on a tux?
Sandy: Pick your battles, honey.

Seth: So do you think that I'll get to see you again?
Anna: No.
Seth: Oh, okay.
Anna: No, it's just... I know this might sound kind of... whatever... but I'm spending the rest of the summer on a sailing trip. To Tahiti.
Seth: You like sailing?
Anna: Yeah.

This is the first appearance of Anna Stern, portrayed by Samaire Armstrong.
When Seth, Ryan and Kirsten arrive at the ballroom for Cotillion fitting, they arrive in the Range Rover. However in the direct next scene, Sandy is seen arriving back home from surfing in the Range Rover. The other three are still at the Cotillion fitting.
