"The Day is Done" is a short story by science fiction author Lester del Rey, originally published in the May 1939 issue of Astounding Science-Fiction . The short story documents the waning days of the last of the Neanderthals. Many science-fiction authors, including Isaac Asimov, have remarked on the emotional aspects of the story.
