[edit] History
The newspaper's name became the "UMSL Current" in 1966. "UMSL" was later dropped from the name. The change was intended to foster an identity independent from the University of Missouri–Columbia. It was preceded by the bi-weekly "Mizzou News" from 1963-66 and the monthly "Tiger Cub" from 1960-63. "Current" also reflected a river motif that aligned with the students' choice of "Riverman" for the UMSL mascot.
Some notable events:
- The Current's office in a house at 7940 Natural Bridge Rd. was damaged by an arsonist in 1997.
- The Current broke a national story in Sept. 1999 when it reported that the president of the Student Government Association was a convicted felon who had pleaded guilty to two felonies, stealing a credit device and fraudulent use of a credit device, shortly after he won the spring election. [1]
Current alumni:
- Vincent Schoemehl - Former mayor of St. Louis
- Clint Zweifel - state representative for 78th district of Missouri
- Jeremy Rutherford - sports reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
- Earl Swift - staff writer for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot and author
- Marty Hendin - vice president of community relations for the St. Louis Cardinals
- Frank Cusumano - St. Louis area radio and television sportscaster
- Kevin Slaten - St. Louis area radio sportscaster
[edit] Organization
The Current operates as a student organization with its own constitution and is governed by the Student Publications Committee of the University Assembly. The staff votes each year to endorse a candidate for editor-in-chief. Their choice is then approved by the same committee.
The Current is funded primarily by advertising revenue supplemented by student activity fees. All positions at the newspaper are staffed by students with one faculty adviser.
