The Crypt School is a grammar school for boys in the city of Gloucester, England, founded in 1539 by John and Joan Cooke. The original school was part of St Mary de Crypt church in Southgate St and the schoolroom can still be seen there. Later, the school moved to Greyfriars and in 1943, to its current site at Podsmead. Despite suffering problems in the 20th century with the school being closed for several years, hard work and better management steered the school back into existence and current education changes in Gloucestershire now ensure the survival of the Crypt as a grammar school.

[edit] Academic
The Crypt School is one of the Specialist Science Schools in Gloucester, which reflects the school's achievements in the scientific field as well as its investment in facilities for all sciences (including Mathematics, Geology and ICT etc.). The school has also been awarded an 'Artsmark' Award by the Arts Council of England for the quality of provision in creative and performing arts.
As one of Gloucester's four grammar schools (two boys, two girls), the school's results are consistently extremely high (particularly at GCSE level - with 95% gaining 5 A*-C passes). The results at all levels are far in excess of the national average, and also the average of the Gloucester LEA which happens to be one of the most successful in the country.
At the end of every academic year pupils, staff and former Cryptians gather at Gloucester Cathedral for Founders Day, an evening when the school remembers its past and how the school was founded. The school is currently the oldest post of education in the city of Gloucester.
[edit] Miscellaneous
[edit] School Song - Carmen Cryptiense
Pio cantu celebremus
Scholam, pie memoremus
Conditores, quis debemus
Tot Musarum munera.
Laus Ioanni tribuenda,
Laus Ioannae concinenda.
Vivat schola Cryptiensis,
Vivat in perpetuum!
Stat per annos domus crescens
Fortiorque fit senescens,
Laeta prole revirescens
Dum labuntur saecula.
Viget prisca fide plena,
Viget nova spe serena.
Vivat schola Cryptiensis,
Vivat in perpetuum!
