The Cover Girls
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cover Girls are a New York City-based Freestyle, Urban/Dance-Pop trio, the brainchild of music promoter Sal Abbatiello. In 1987, the trio consisted of Louise Sabater (who is also known as Angel Clivillés), Caroline Jackson and Sunshine Wright. The Cover Girls are one of the first Freestyle acts to crossover to the pop music charts. Their debut album Show Me produced five Billboard Hot 100 chart hits including "Show Me" (#44), "Spring Love" (#98), "Because Of You" (#27), "Promise Me" (#40), and "Inside Outside" (#55). This album is considered a classic in the Freestyle music genre.
In late 1988, Sunshine Wright was replaced by Margo Urban. The Cover Girls released their 2nd album, "We Can't Go Wrong" in 1989. The First single from that album "My Heart Skips a Beat" climbed to #38 and the ballad "We Can't Go Wrong" became their first Top 10 hit, peaking at #8. "All That Glitters Isn't Gold" also charted at #49.
In 1988 The Cover Girls signed with Darrin McGillis Productions to tour over 40 cities with Menudo featuring Ricky Martin .Official Link.
In 1990, While The Cover Girls were the opening act on The New Kids on The Block Tour, Angel Clivilles decided to leave the group. Evelyn Escalera was hired to replace Angel that same year.
In 1992, Margo Urban was replaced by Michelle Valentine and The Cover Girls released their 3rd album "Here It Is" on Epic Records. On this effort, the only remaining original member was Caroline Jackson. Caroline, Evelyn and Michelle scored The Cover Girls second Top 10 hit ["Wishing On A Star" #9). Two other singles were released and charted as well. Funk Boutique (#55), and their final chart entry to date, "Thank You" (#75).
The cover girls follow-up album, 1996's "Satisfy", only credited Michelle Valentine as a vocalist.
Since leaving The Cover Girls in 1990, Sabater has had moderate solo success on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart as Angel Clivillés. In 2000 she released her solo debut album, "Angel". Today Angel tours the U.S. as Angel (The Original Cover Girl).
In 2001 the group reformed, with Evelyn Escalera as the lead singer. Evelyn along with Lorraine Munoz and Sabrina Nieves are the current line-up of The Cover Girls. They are currently touring the U.S and working on The Cover Girls' 5th album.
As of March 2007, The Cover Girls have posted a new song titled, "Sorry" on their official MySpace page. Many fans are hoping this will be a official release with a new album to follow.
