County College (formally The County College) Lancaster was financed via funding by Lancashire County council in 1969. It was expanded in 1978 with the creation of County West. In 2004 it further expanded, after taking in the buildings that were vacated by Cartmel College. These buildings have been renovated, and in 2005 the college bar moved to this area, named County South. In October 2006, the college expanded again with the opening of three large residences built on the site of Cartmel residence blocks. County West is due to be demolished within the next couple of years.

A notable feature of the original building is a large old oak tree in the quadrangle. The building was erected around the tree without damage to its roots. The College is very conscious of its responsibility for the health of the tree. Beneath its shade are two bench seats erected in memory of two former College Officers. An oak leaf is often used as a symbol by the College, including on its Coat of Arms. The College is the only Lancaster College with a Coat of Arms granted by the College of Arms.

The college is highly active socially, partaking in many of the available sporting events as well as having a hectic social calender with the opportunity to go on nights out that are exclusive to County members. Additionally the large kitchens which can accommodate up to 26 residents allow for residents to quickly get to know many people from their area of the college. This helps contribute to the friendly feel of the college as a community.

The college partakes in all of the inter-college sport events and competitions which are an integral part of collegiate life. These competitions relate to the Carter Shield and the George Whyatt Trophy. The college darts, pool, football and netball teams have all achieved greatly over recent years wid Nertth the women winning all three of their events (Darts, Pool and Netball) in 2006.

County College is also famous for its football team and their particular Bar golf championship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pub_golf
