The Cooperettes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cooperettes started out on Brunswick Records in 1966 with "Goodbye School," "Don't Trust Him" and "Everything's Wrong." However they were best known for their song "Shing-A-Ling."

Their third and last release for Brunswick - in 1967, the song was backed with "Life Has No Meaning Now." It was re-released in 1975 in the UK due to its popularity on the Northern Soul Scene. Its instrumental bed is the same as the unreleased classic "You Need Love" by Irma and the Fascinators - which finally saw the light of vinyl in 1975.

However that year - the charting Northern soul girl-group song would be "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by The Sharonettes in 1975, when it made #26. The group moved to ABC Records and released 1968's "Peace Maker" and 1969's "Spiral Road." Both were backed with "Trouble" as the b-side but none of them charted.

The group made a move to IDB Records where they released "Win All Your Love." The song was released in the early seventies and was backed with "Satisfaction." The single was their only release on the short-lived record company, IDB, and their final song.

Not much is known of the group's members or where/how they were formed. It is suggested that they were probably a session group or multiple session groups recording under a licensed name. It has also been suggested that they were two different groups, and that the Cooperettes on Brunswick were not the same group as the 'Cooperetts' who released on ABC.

Their songs are often heard at Northern Soul Parties in the UK. Their songs are cult classics and are more famous now than when they were originally released.
