The Community Group (London Borough of Hounslow)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Community Group, also known as the Independent Community Group (ICG), and registered with the Electoral Commission as The Community (London Borough of Hounslow), is a small political party based in Isleworth, in the London Borough of Hounslow.
The group was originally founded on 1st January 1994 as the Isleworth Community Group to build a "vibrant community" and advocate public participation in decision making processes.
Following the UK local elections, 2006 on May 4th 2006, the group has six councillors, representing Isleworth and Syon wards. They declare themselves to be "non-political" and willing to work with individuals from any of the three major parties. The party also stood in Hounslow South and Osterley and Spring Grove.
In the 2005 UK general election, the group stood for the Brentford and Isleworth seat, winning 2.4% of the vote.
The group's leader, councillor Phil Andrews, has admitted to having previously been an active member of the National Front. Although he he has vociferously denied any contiuing link to such racist ideology some critics have found contradictions in the policies of the ICG and the fact that its support base does not appear to reflect the diverse population of the borough.
