[edit] Plot synopsis

It's suburban Baltimore 1959. In this town a man is not a man unless he is a WWII or Korean War Veteran. Twelve year old Danny Himes (Gregory Smith), an agile, athletic boy, dreams of climbing a 203 foot radio tower in part to live-down the reputation of his father being a coward. Earl Himes (David Strathairn) did not serve in the military. It takes old man Langer (John Hurt), a tough, witty, chain-smoking, whisky drinking character, who has come home to die, to help Danny learn the true meaning of courage. As Danny's father earns the respect and vindication of the community, the young boy and the old man develop a bond that helps each of them through important passages of a man's life, that of bravery, friendship and death.
