The Chief is a fictional character from the comedy 1965-1970 NBC/CBS spy-genre situation comedy Get Smart, portrayed by character actor Ed Platt . The Chief is the boss of main character Maxwell Smart and fellow supporting character Agent 99. Along with the latter, he functions as straight-man to Smart, helping to set up an endless series of jokes, usually for two or three people, for which Smart typically delivers the punchline.
