Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

As Valentine's Day rapidly approaches, the newly engaged Julie struggles between her loyalty to Kaitlin (therefore sticking with Bullit) and true love. When Ryan says that they won't do anything for Valentine's Day (he says it's a recipe for disaster), Taylor attempts to patch things up between the distant Ryan and his dad, who they realize is in love with Julie. Kaitlin plots with Bullit to win her over, while Ryan and Taylor struggle to have Frank and Julie together by Valentine's. With a new baby on the horizon, Kirsten is preoccupied with the one she lost, and can't stop thinking about her abortion. Meanwhile, Summer questions her future with Seth as he questions their past after a fortune teller tells her she is destined for a man named George.

But by the time the stars align on the big night, everyone is in each other's sights, as for the last time in Newport Beach, Valentine's Day goes off without a hitch.

[edit] Trivia

  • This episode was originally going to be called "The Destiny" but the title was changed in favor of the more comedic "The Case of The Franks", a reference to Julie's 'Ailment'
  • The following characters appeared in the 1985 flashbacks:
Sandy Cohen, Kirsten Cohen, Jimmy Cooper and Taryn Baker
  • The following characters appeared in the 1998 flashbacks:
Seth Cohen, Summer Roberts, Taylor Townsend, Luke Ward and Holly Fischer
  • Summer's poem "I Wish I Was a Mermaid" from The Girlfriend that Seth mentioned, we find out in the 1998 flashback that the poem was not Summer's poem at all, but was Taylor's poem.
  • In The Ties That Bind, Kirsten hinted she had an abortion. In the 1985 flashback, it was revealed she aborted Jimmy's child.
  • In the 1998 flashback, Luke was seen bullying Seth. It has now been confirmed that Luke has been bullying Seth his whole life until Ryan came to Newport.
  • It was revealed in the 1998 flashback that Holly and Summer made fun of Taylor in elementary school and called her "Taylor Dorksend" which might explain why Taylor was Summer's enemy as seen in early season 3 episodes. It might have also been payback on Summer for stealing her poem.
  • There was originally going to be a younger Ryan Atwood and younger Julie Cooper for flashbacks, but they did not make the final cut.[citation needed]
