The story takes place in a rural town called Twin Lakes. There is a bungalow by Nancy's new friend, Laura Pendleton's new guardian, Mr. Jacob Aborn's house that comes in, in the middle of the book.

The main character is Nancy Drew, a young blond haired girl. There is another girl named Laura Pendleton, a blonde haired girl with brown eyes.

Nancy Drew is trying to help her father solve a theft of securities at a bank. While investigating, Nancy’s friend Laura, who had saved her from a sinking boat on the lake, is in danger. Nancy figures out who the thieves are.They are people pretending to be Laura's guardians. After being captured by Mr. Dowd and escaping, Nancy tries to stop the Dowd’s from getting out of town. Nancy gets help from her friend’s and her father who come looking for her. Then Nancy and Mr. Drew stop the thieves and get back all the securities that they had stolen.
