The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya[1] (涼宮ハルヒの退屈 Suzumiya Haruhi no Taikutsu?) is the third of eight light novels in the Haruhi Suzumiya series written by Japanese author Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Japanese artist Noizi Ito. It was first published on December 27, 2003 (ISBN 4-04-429203-5).

The story takes place around June and July, right after the adventures in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Haruhi is at it again, dragging Kyon and the rest of the SOS Brigade to doing extrodinary things such as entering a baseball tournament. Not only are Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki helping Haruhi to alleviate her boredom, but many of the background characters as well, such as Tsuruya and Kyon's Little Sister. Another story is that something has gone with the timeplane in Haruhi's life, and it's up to Kyon, Mikuru and Mikuru's older self from the future to find the problem. Also, where has the Computer Club's President gone to? Who is his mysterious girlfriend, and how can a giant cave cricket fit in a small apartment? Another story involves a mere boat trip to a mysterious island gone astray. Did Haruhi wish for something way out of her control? Lastly, why is there a knife sticking out from the heart of the owner of the mansion on the secluded island? These questions and more await Kyon, and he knows he's got alot of work ahead of him.
