IMDb profile

The Big Sleep (1978) was the second movie version of Raymond Chandler's 1939 novel of the same name. It was directed by Michael Winner and starred Robert Mitchum as the detective Philip Marlowe. James Stewart appeared as General Sternwood. The action was set in London, England rather than California. The movie contained material more explicit that what could only be hinted at in the 1946 version, such as homosexuality, pornography and nudity.

The plot concerns General Sternwood hiring hard-boiled private detective Marlowe as he is being blackmailed by a homosexual pornographer named Arthur Geiger. The convoluted trail involves Marlowe following various suspicious characters, many of whom mysteriously die in his wake. Eventually Marlowe discovers the truth concerning Charlotte and Carmilla Sternwood (played by Sarah Miles and Candy Clark respectively), the General's daughters. Richard Boone makes an appearance as a fearsome hitman.
