The Big Beat

"The Big Beat" is a song from the popular musical, Over Here! which opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre (Broadway) on March 6, 1974. The song was written by Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman. It is the final "up-tempo" song of the second act, prior to the bitter-sweet finale number.

The original Broadway cast included Andrews Sisters, John Travolta, Treat Williams, Marilu Henner, Samuel E. Wright, and Ann Reinking and marked the beginning of a record breaking number of now iconic actors' careers. When Patty Andrews' husband sued the show midseason claiming that he was owed a royalty for being the rehearsal pianist, the production was forced to an untimely end. The case was eventually dismissed but the show closed on January 4, 1975 nevertheless. The musical ran for 341 performances on Broadway. Janie Sell, who played the part of "Mitzi the spy", won the "Best Featured Actress" Tony Award as well as the 1974 Theatre World Award. The show was nominated for a total of 5 Tonies.
