The Battle of 40 (862-863) In 863 Muslim emirs attacked Armenia without hesitation but found a worthy opponent in the Armenian prince and his army. Prince Ashot Bagratouni went to battle with 40,000 men against the enemy army which consisted of 80,000 men, and still defeated them heavily on the shores of the Araxes. The Armenians appropriately called it “The Battle of 40”.[1]
