The Bathers

The subject of bathing women has been painted by artists from many different schools of art and at many times in history. Among these paintings, are two by nineteenth century French painters that have gained a great deal of significance under the same title.

In 1887, a painting with the title, The Bathers, was created by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a leading figure in the development of the Impressionist period.

Another painting entitled, The Bathers, was created in 1898 by Paul Gauguin, also a French artist, who began painting among the Impressionists, but who is considered a Post-Impressionist because he abandoned their style in favor of one with many other influences. On October 7, 2005 the New York Times announced that Steven A. Cohen had purchased Gauguin's The Bathers and van Gogh's Peasant Woman Against a Background of Wheat from Stephen A. Wynn for $100 million dollars.
