The Barony von Gloeden

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gloeden is the name of a noble German family of Pomeranian origin.

The Barony von Gloeden continued uninterrupted from the year 1272, when Weichmann von Gloeden became the first Baron von Gloeden, until the death of Baron Bruno von Gloeden in 1928.

[edit] Wilhelm von Gloeden controversy

Von Gloeden Family members always contended that, as far as his lineage was concerned, the Taormina photographer born in 1856 who called himself Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was an impostor. It has been suggested that he was not even "von Gloeden," but more possibly "Kloethe," "Klothe" or "Gloethe." Baron Georg Erich von Gloeden contended the photographer was adopted by Baron Bruno, after which he called himself a baron and made up his lineage.

For Wilhelm to lay claim to the title of "Baron von Gloeden," a second Barony von Gloeden would need to have existed.

[edit] Family History

The family were resident in Pomerania since the mid-seventeenth century, more prominently in Mecklenburg, later spreading to Marken and Lunenburg.

The earliest known ancestor was Rambertus Gloeden, whose signature is found as witness to the Guestrow cathedral church in 1226. His son, received the title Baron von Gloeden in 1272.

The von Gloeden family coat of arms has a single curved widderhorn in the shield and one on the helmet. The Roggenhagen line, from which the noble von Gloeden family descended, has one horn on the shield and two horns on the helmet.

The family history is detailed in Dr. Carl Gesterding's Genealogien und beziehungsweise Familienstiftungen Pommerscerin, in the von Gloeden family bible record (1773 to 1935), and in the family's Gloedhoff estate book from Griebow.

The von Gloeden seal and bible, the estate book and all other remaining von Gloeden documentation survive in the possession of the Schilling family, heirs of Baroness Anna Ulrike von Gloeden (d.1935).
