The Arlingtonian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arlingtonian is the official school newspaper of Arlington High School in LaGrange, New York, United States. The paper is entirely student run, though faculty advised and funded by the school district. The Arlingtonian publishes monthly while school is in session, excluding September and May. The paper is consistently ranked number one among regional high school papers, and most recently received a Gold Crown rating by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
[edit] History
The paper was first published in 1924, though the first copy on record in the student office is from the year 1934. The original issue was bound in a soft-cover booklet format. The next set of issues on record are from the 1940s, and are consistently archived through the late 1970s. These issues are bound in hard cover volumes, and were typically hand typed on letter sized paper until the 1970s. Much of the 1980s are missing from the archive. In the late 1950s, the paper's name was changed to The Flash, but the name Arlingtonian was re-instituted in the 1970s.
The paper experienced a renaissance in the late 1980s through to the turn of the century. The Arlingtonian has been completely archived since 1987, and ran with the same masthead and general layout style until 2003. By the year 2000, the entire layout process had been digitized and articles were submitted and edited via the internet.
Many major updates were made, including the devising of a brand new look and font style, the writing of powerful computer scripts to streamline production, and the change to broadspread paper. By the end of the year, the Arlingtonian was back in production and published monthly from April through to June.
[edit] Logistics
The paper typically prints 2800 issues every month The paper is printed by Southern Dutchess News in Wappingers Falls, New York. Typically, two issues a year are printed in color: the November homecoming issue, and the final June issue. Although the school includes over 3000 students, only 2500 issues are distributed across campus. The remaining 300 are given to the district's three middle schools, the central district office, the paper's official archives, and local businesses who advertise in the paper.
The paper generally features a dozen dedicated editors, two advisors, and about 60 casual staff members who contribute articles on a volunteer basis. Recent years have seen a disproportionate amount of editors be seniors. Recent efforts have been made to change this trend, and so the paper's future is looking a bit more stable for the first time in half a decade.
