The Arches (Glasgow)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arches is a bar, arts venue, theatre, live music venue and nightclub in Glasgow, Scotland, which first opened in 1991. The Arches is situated in the City Centre under Glasgow Central station and the West Coast Main Line in the brick arches that support the station. The venue has 65,000 sq ft of floor space, which is spread over two floors and seven arches.
[edit] History
In 1991 Artistic Director Andy Arnold founded the venue as a theatre space, and discovered that putting on club nights was an excellent way to help support his artistic programme. Today clubbing, bar, café, live music and corporate hospitality revenue is invested in the theatre, visual art and live music programme in the building.
[edit] Theatre
The acclaimed Arches Theatre Company specialises in little-known plays by well-known figures like Samuel Beckett and Tennessee Williams and large-scale multi-art form promenade pieces, whilst also offering a platform for risk taking and experiment in theatre.
[edit] Club
On the 29th of March 2006 The Arches was voted one of the top ten clubs in the world by international DJs in DJMag [1]. The venue is home to several monthly house, techno, trance and electronica events including Pressure, Colours, Inside Out, and Death Disco, as well as one-off events like the Subcity Lauch Party. The majority of these nights are run by outside promoters like Slam and Colours with The Arches hired as a venue. The venue has a large Martin Audio Wavefront soundsystem in the main room.
