The Agenda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Agenda with Steve Paikin [1] is TVOntario's new flagship current affairs program, hosted by Steve Paikin. The program's creation was announced as part of programming and re-structuring changes at TVOntario on June 29, 2006.[2]

The program's format is designed to provide in-depth coverage of specific contemporary social issues, and will also offer user-generated content. The show practises what Paikin calls "long-form" journalism; each program tackles no more than two topics, and often no more than one. "We are going to be out there giving people what they've been telling us they want: more intelligent analysis, and more robust, thought-provoking debate and discussion among newsmakers and experts," Paikin says.

The Agenda with Steve Paikin also marks TVO's entry into the emerging world of citizen journalism. "Video, audio or written content sent in by our viewers from across the province will add to the diversity of voices, ideas and stories that need to be told," says Dan Dunsky, who co-created Diplomatic Immunity with Paikin eight years ago and is now The Agenda's executive producer. "We are going to leave it up to the news shows to tell the audience what is happening in the world. People will tune into The Agenda with Steve Paikin to learn why," Dunsky adds.

TVOntario is embarking on a new digital strategy that they announced earlier this summer, and some of The Agenda's content is available on demand through technologies like iPods, PDAs and video-enabled phones.

Steve Paikin, quoted by the CBC and referring to the cancellation of Studio 2, said "It’s a little difficult to feel shortchanged today. The show had a great run — it lasted longer than (CBC news show) The Journal. So I’m proud of everything that we all accomplished doing Studio 2, but we’ve got a new challenge ahead of us now and we’re going to do the best damn job we can on it."[3]
