The Academy of European Swordsmanship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Academy of European Swordsmanship is a Canadian incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to the study and practice of historical western martial arts. It relies on the many surviving manuals of Medieval and Renaissance masters of defence for its source material.

The AES was established in 1994 in Edmonton, Alberta, concentrating on the German school, but also including Italian, English and other sources.

It is rare for Western Martial Arts schools to compete in open martial arts competitions. The AES competes on outside tournaments against Eastern Martial Arts practitioners, as well as holds exchagnes with other WMA groups. There are now three chapters of the AES, the founding chapter in Edmonton, a study group at the University of Alberta, and a chapter in Calgary, Alberta.
