The Aakatas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aakata's are an American punk rock band, formed in South Bend, Indiana in 1997. The band originally comprised vocalist Rusty Curtis, guitarist Todd Meszaros, drummer Cormac Brien and bassist Jim Monagle, four years later guitarist Jason Fowler was added. The Aakata's are widely credited with keeping the punk torch lit in northern Indiana. From their earliest days as a band, The Aakata's stood apart from their punk peers with their musicianship, as well as their lyrics! The Aakata's style often draws comparison with the Clash and Sex Pistols. The Aakata's emerged as a response to what was perceived to be the increasingly safe and bloated heavy metal and manufactured alternative music of the mid-1990s. The band created various controversies during their career which captivated the Indiana punk scene, but often eclipsed their music. Their shows and tours repeatedly faced difficulties from authorities, and public appearances often ended in disaster and riot. The group went on hiatus in 2004.

Origin and punk rock success Childhood friends Todd Meszaros and Jim Monagle started playing together in 1989. Todd grew sick of second rate metal bands claiming to be punk rock bands so he started The Aakata's. The Aakata's enjoyed widespread popularity throughout the 1990s, with the band playing constantly from 1998 through 2003. They have released 5 full-length albums, one 7" vinyl split with the band Bootjack and numerous tracks on compilations.
