[edit] State College History
This page should NOT be marked for deletion or being merged for the following reasons:
- The Phyrst is a part of Penn State and State College tradition for many decades.
- The Phyrst Family band has been around for many decades making it one of the oldest musical groups at the University.
- The official webpage for the Phyrst often does not work and contains little information about the establishment. This wikipedia entry is an attept to fix that problem.
- Ask any Penn State Alum about the Phyrst and they will surely have a story about it. The bar is legendary for getting its patrons involved in the fun and spreading a general sense of community among those who attend. Idg101 21:59, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
If you are a Penn State student or Alum, please contribute to this page! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Idg101 (talk • contribs) 16:42, 4 March 2007.
- Would you oppose merging to an article like Penn State area bars? The problem is that if we keep this article, bars enthusiasts may clamor for an article about their favorite bars as well. Also, Attribution is difficult for this type of topic. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 19:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Work in Progress
Please do not delete this page. I am still working on it. See, this establishment is not simply a bar. Its really a part of State College and Penn State history. The founders worked for HRB systems which was a employment staple of State College and big part of its history. The Phyrst has a unique history that is very relevant to State College. If you want to move this page, thats one thing, but to delete it is to do a disservice to the history of State College. This is a valid place of interest for State College as its the only Irish bar in the area. Its not simply a place to go drink, their are traditions there that have gone on for over 2 decades such as The Phyrst Family Band. Table Wars alone is something unique to State College and The Phyrst. This is the only establishment in town where you can see the President of The Pennsylvania State University play in a band at a 'bar!' The Phyrst has real personality and place in thousands of alumni memories. I have emailed the webmaster for the 'bar' and will add his information as well. I am also in the process of getting pictures for the page! This is only forum to capture the rich history of The Phyrst! Idg101 21:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] place of local interest
This article qualifies under Wikipedia:Places_of_local_interest. It has a long history and is a landmark in State College, Pennsylvania, and it is an important tradition among Penn State University alumni, faculty, and current students. The page has just been started, so give the creator some time to build it up. Also note that there are links to it from the State College article and the Graham Spanier article, which are the city and President of Penn State University. Some of the external links at the bottom of the Phyrst article are to [1]: [2]: newspaper articles that were written about the Phyrst (which should count toward the Wikipedia: Attribution requirement). Also, of interest is that [3]: the new "IT" band in State College, The Nightcrawlers, plays regularly at the Phyrst, and this Phyrst article contains an external link to photos of them playing at the Phyrst. [edit] removed speedy deletion request
I removed the request for speedy deletion because this article does not meet the "A7" Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion: "If the assertion is likely to be controversial or there has been a previous AfD, the article should be nominated for AfD instead." Also under in the same guidlines page, under "Non-criteria" for speedy deletion, it states: "If the article gives a claim that might be construed as making the subject notable, it should be taken to a wider forum." [edit] Redirect
I am going to assume that anyone who has viewed the page and wants it to be deleted has not lived in state college that long is is completely unaware of the history of the Phyrst. The Phyrst has a rich history, as does the Rathskellar (which I will be making a page for shortly as well). These places have no forum for which to record their history except here. I am willing to get find the owners of these establishments and have them credit the information I write about them. The Phyrst Phamily band alone should probably have its own wikipedia page. Did you know that it was started in the 60s. Do you even know what HRB Inc. is? The company that employed the people who started the Phyrst. Do you even know where in state college that company is housed now or what they do. If you had any clue, you would realize how much that bar has played into the history of State College, the town, MINUS the university. HRB started several offshoot companies including a branch of SRI (Stanford Research Institue) I bet you didnt know theres one located in state college. If you think Im a student and I want to make a page about my favorite bar in town you are twice wrong. One, the skeller is my favorite pub and two, I am not a student! Next time, before you delete a page or remove content from it, lets discuss it first. Regards, Idg101 02:03, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Idg101, there was a discussion, already: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Phyrst. You removed the link to it from here (which I reinstated), so I believe you're aware of it. The discussion resulted in consesus to delete, though I was generous and closed it as Redirect so that if there is attributable content it can still be mentioned in the parent article. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-10 10:02Z
Hi Idg101, since you were apparently not aware of the AFD, I won't redirect or re-nominate it right now, but please show evidence notability. The best evidence is multiple independent published sources of which The Phyrst is the primary subject. If that isn't met in a week or two we might have to re-AFD. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-13 09:28Z
[edit] Original research
If this article is to be kept, there are multiple claims that are uncited and thus are original research:
- The entire section on Table Wars, though supported by SI insofar as such a tradition exists, is unsupported insofar as how the tradition is performed.
- Citied source Idg101 18:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- Sections "The Hydrant" and "The Hanging Mugs" are unsourced.
- Citied source Idg101 18:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- The trivia section contains two items (the origin of the name and the FSU connection) that are unsourced.
- FSU connection is public knowledge, look at the FSUopoly game or in the phone book. I work at Raytheon and that should be a good enough citation for the origin of the bar as our HR department has documents describing this. Getting the original document is going to be difficult it probably contains other information marked company private. Ill look into this. Idg101 18:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, the bottom line is that if there are no sources available, the information cannot be included. Please read and refer to Wikipedia's attribution policy. — PSUMark2006 talk | contribs 18:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, PSUMark. I have also removed some of the more egregious unsourced claims, if there are any more, please remove them and refrain from adding them back until a source is found. A college paper saying "someone went to The Phyrst" is not a source for the claim that The Phyrst is famous, so I have adjusted that claim. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-13 09:29Z
