[edit] "Revert damage, I take it back"
How can you revert it to something that just looks damaged to anyone stopping by? Since when are any external links handled with such ugly formatting? What justification is there for siting a song sample in the caption for a picture? What justification is there for the wacky cat-on-a-keyboard punctuation?
Please don't insultingly revert somebody honestly trying to fix something that is very strange for no obvious reason. --Dhartung | Talk 09:59, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- Dearest Dan
- My sincere apologies for any insulting here, Not the intention at all, by all means. I understand what you were thinking. Life is to short to be upset at the wacky cat on the keyboard.
- I have attempted to make the strange looking text you speak of better looking for anyone stopping by. Perhaps you now might approve?
- As far as I know, there are no Wikipedia Audio rules for tacking on external links with music linked to a pic, or pics. My opinion is I think it may be fine for people from other non speaking english countries to have a taste of audio with relation to a pic. Heck, if you took a conventional two dimensional encyclopedia, we never had this opportunity in the past. We can sort of make things come alive today on a computer type of encyclopedia, like Wikipedia. I like animations too.
- On another note, it sure was cool to talk and meet Aaron Neville, The guy is really strong for his age.
- Please do accept my apology here. Thanks and regards, Scott 13:06:38, 2005-09-09 (UTC)

- Fine, I understand you meant no harm, but honestly -- you don't even use normal Talk page formatting (I fixed that). It's very helpful on the Wikipedia to Wikipedia:Be bold, as they say, but it's also helpful to look around and see what else has been done. Normally media at Wikipedia is converted to .ogg format (see Wikipedia:Media) and uploaded. If media is at an external link, it would usually be placed in the External links section, with an appropriate note about what type of media is being linked to (e.g. "Real Audio file"), or in a separate section called Multimedia or Media (examples: Johannes Brahms#Media; Beastie Boys#Media). Following these conventions is especially important for readers from non-English speaking countries, a group you're concerned about. It helps them find things in a foreign language if they are handled the same way in more than one article.
- The main concern about externally launched media is that Wikipedia does not control the content. What if it doesn't work one day? Will the user be confused about the proper working of Wikipedia? If it is properly marked as an external link, they will realize it is hosted separately.
- Now, I think what you're indicating is that the audio that is launched externally (where? your personal site?) is connected to the photo, i.e. the same performance, thus there is a relationship. It is great to have that sort of multimedia relationship, but it should be handled in a way that makes it clear to the reader. What I will do, then, is edit the page such that the caption permits such launching, but using a more common style of caption, with the audio link separate. (Having the entire caption be a blue external link looks like bad HTML from 1997, honestly.) That will make it clearer yet how they are related. I will also add back in a Media section and finish up with the formatting so that it appears similar to others. I trust this will satisfy your desire to have this contributino available to the community, while keeping the style of the entire Wikipedia as consistent as possible.
- That said, I'll second your personal note. I've only seen them on TV, but they've been through a lot with the hurricane. --Dhartung | Talk 22:10, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
Dan,
I looked at the Wikipedia media as you suggested, looks like I need a Master degree to comprehend the text to convert, Yikes. Never was good at the MP3 stuff. Always felt weird about copying, so stayed away.
It is interesting you mention about control of media by Wikipedia, I do understand the concept. You speak the truth. External links same problem. Again, point well taken if it is not there one day. No, the audio is not launched from my website. Neither is the picture, the picture belongs to Wikipedia now. I did take the picture though and now attempt to just donate them, does not bother me the least.
Do you really know how to edit the page such that the caption permits such launching, but using a more common style of caption, with the audio link separate, but still allow the picture to be there maybe kind of attached and capable to adjust the size of both to accommidate the size of both simultaneously? That would be great to do! I would not know how to do that. That was my attempted goal and it took a while to figure out. By process of elimination.
There are other places/ articles I have done on Wikipedia the same, presently to convert. About four total now. Before changing here's others I did in the likeness:
and an odd one at the bottom of my main user page "Listen to KFOG live streaming".....Although it links to a streaming URL.
Again, would it reveal using (widows media) as the standard of which I always use in conjunction with the picture?
On the same note, be advised I researched using correspondence with my Email to other friends and found (Windows media) over the years to be the most common and widely used for translating any media sent via Email. There seemed to be no problem while real media had problems. What I did was I sent pawns out to a number of different friends over the years all across the country to see if they could see it. The responce of about ten differnt people was a 100% translation so I take it most all computers use or have Windows media installed. Unless of course, your from another country? But I don't think so.
As for the text I can't disagree with you at all it does look like crap, but that was what I had to work with to get this far.
Take your time, let me know your ideas as I would like to go further with your help on this. Maybe we can help revolutionize Wikipedia and make a real contribution as I was attempting to do in good faith? Your wacky keyboard friend.......Scott 05:53:50, 2005-09-10 (UTC)

I'll hold up on that for now. Nite Nite
