According to the Newcastle Evening Standard (4 Mar 2006), the pub is nicknamed the Monkey Bar after 19th century Irish bricklayers who would leave their hods (or Monkeys) in the passageway as security for paying their bar bill. Thatcher131 16:06, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Newcastle Evening Standard does not exist, I guess it was a typo any you meant Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Anon user 13:42, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
