[edit] Query on Roman road location

I'm not sure about the history of yorkgate/prehistoric track section as i merged it from the Otley and Chevin pages. I would imagine however that as it stand the info is incorrect. I bet the prehistoric track runs along the ridgeline, probably continuing a track that passes the swastika stones on ilkley moor. And that yorkgate 1/4 mile south of the ridge, is the roman road. Though i have no direct evidence for this.

[edit] Further thoughts

Interesting links User:Ben@liddicott.com. It would seem that the true route is not at all well known. Though i wouldn't be surprised if local knowledge held the answer somewhere. A quick look on the current 1:50000 os map (http://shorterlink.com/?9B2D3H) does show a disjointed line of 'tracks with right of way' on the line you suggest. Exdending this line one can easily imagine a connection of tracks that link toward Adel East and Ilkley West. I also seem to remeber from cycling down the lane past woodlands farm that it is of cobbled construction, in a fairly irregular manor, that could be the old subbase of a roman road, or the severely degraded surface. This is all speculation of course.
I supose also that the 'Ebor Way' is the route that is proposed as a prehistoric track along the chevin?

[edit] This should help.

I agree with you, Yorkgate looks like a roman road, in that it is straight, and reasonably wide. The track on the ridge appears to be neither.

But we should get the user User:Jschwa1 who contributed that paragraph to Otley to comment.

As far as I can find out from online sources (I won't be able to get near a library for a while), ther was a roman road running from Ilkley, via a fort at Menston, over the chevin, through Yeadon, via the fort north of Adel, and then on to Tadcaster and York. One site says that it follows The Grove in Ilkly, Otley Old Road and Wigton Lane. But I can't find any reference to the exact route between Menston and Adel.

I take it Jshwa1 is referring to the track with right of way which runs parallel to Yorkgate, past Intake Farm, Braken End Farm, and Woodlands Farm.

This page states that the route of the road over Guisely moor (i.e., just south of the Chevin) is marked on old OS maps.

[edit] Source

The source for the fact about the Roman Road came from a council leaflet about Chevin Forest Park. Obviousely, it could be wrong, so if anyone has a better insight....... Jschwa1 16:21, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
