The Star Ocean: The Second Story manga, drawn by Mayumi Azuma, is based upon the Star Ocean: The Second Story video game developed by tri-Ace. It follows the storyline of the game, which follows the exploits of the two protagonists: Claude C. Kenni, a young ensign in the Earth Federation going on his first real mission with his father, and Rena Lanford, a young girl living in the rural village of Arlia on the planet Expel. Star Ocean EX, the anime series that retells the tale of the video game, is based upon this manga. The manga was never translated into English, and can only be found in Japanese.

Twenty years after the events of Star Ocean, Ronixis J. Kenni and his son, Claude C. Kenni embark on a mission to investigate a planet. Claude C. Kenni, while investigating a strange machine with a mysterious energy field around it, transports young Claude to the underdeveloped planet of Expel.
Upon arrival, Claude C. Kenni meets a young girl, Rena Lanford, who is being attacked by a monster. Claude defeats the monster, and joins Rena back in her village of Arlia. Claude learns of Rena's mysterious powers, and the Sorcery Globe, a large meteorite that crashed on Expel. Claude and Rena set off to investigate the Globe, as well as discover where Rena is really from, and how to get Claude home.

Although Star Ocean: The Second Story manga is based upon the game, Star Ocean: The Second Story, it is missing two main recruitable characters from the game's second disc. It also has a few NPCs take more important roles in the manga, such as some funny thieves (monsters from the game), and a girl named Yuuki that you meet in the town of Salva, who sells jam.
