Magic: The Gathering is normally played by creating decks of cards which work together around a certain theme. Players normally purchase starter decks and booster packs, which contain a random selection of cards. Procuring enough cards to build a deck around a coherent theme often requires a significant investment.

Beginning with the Tempest set in 1997, Wizards of the Coast also began producing preconstructed decks, which did not contain random cards, but a pre-set selection of cards that complemented each other in the same theme. This allowed newcomers to begin playing right away with a minimum investment. These decks also were well suited to be played against each other because they had similar rates of success. The themes in these decks can also be a quick way to get a feel for the over-arching themes in a new set.

Although these store-bought preconstructed decks do have a feasible theme, they normally contain few rare cards, and thus do not rate among the top decks among those themes. Players often buy preconstructed decks and swap out some of the weaker cards for more powerful ones. Some examples of how to modify a pre-constructed theme deck to produce a more focused and competitive deck has been covered on the Wizard's website by Jay Moldenhauer-Salazar and others.(eg. modifying the Way of the Warrior Deck[1])
