Description

The Union As It Was Harper's Weekly. The title alludes to the old ca. 1862 Copperhead campaign slogan "The Union as it was, the Constitution as it is". Portrays a black family between a lynched body hanging from a tree and the remains of a burning schoolhouse, with the caption "Worse than Slavery".
