The full image as reproduced in King's Handbook is available as Image:The Dakota 1880s full.jpg. The photographer is unknown. In Finney's book, no copyright is indicated for the image, credit is given to the collections of the New York Historical Society. Negative #34438C of the New York Historical Society.

Assuming it is an anonymous work (I've never seen a photographer's name associated with this image), I think the image would be even {{PD-old}}, as for anonymously published works, the copyright term starts to run at the first publication just about anywhere. Moses S. King himself most likely was not the photographer; he was an editor who published a whole series of such books; see e.g. this list. Lupo 15:12, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
