Hospital Besieged: The Evil Hand Revealed! (Japanese: しのび寄る魔の手!狙われた病室 - Shinobi yoru ma no te! Nerawareta Byōshitsu) is episode 58 of the anime series Naruto. The episode's storyline is from the Chunin Exam manga arc. It explains Gaara's past.
[edit] Plot
The episode starts with Baki pounding on Temari and Kankuro's door, expressing his anger that they have failed to look after Gaara, who has suddenly disappeared, they both begin to panic.
Previously, Gamabunta had sent Naruto to the hospital, and Naruto finally wakes up, three days later, extremely hungry. Luckily, Shikamaru had brought some food and was visiting Naruto. The food was meant for Choji, but Choji was forbidden to eat anything, because he was in the hospital for eating too much. Naruto and Shikamaru decide to play a dirty trick on Choji by eating the food in front of him, but seen later Ino takes the food in for the two. (Shikamaru must have known something was happening in the hospital when he seen that his sand glass suddenly stopped moving, this would explain why Naruto and Shikamaru went to Lee's aid instead of tricking Choji.)
Sakura decides to buy another flower for Rock Lee, still unconscious in the hospital. Gaara follows Sakura, and gets into Lee's room after Sakura leaves. Gaara cannot understand why Guy saved Lee during their battle, goes slightly crazy, and gets a little tormented from his past. Gaara proceeds to use his sand to kill Lee, but he is suddenly unable to move.
Shikamaru had used Shadow Imitation Technique to bind Gaara, which saved Lee's life. Naruto right away gets one good punch into Gaara's face, which cracks his sand armor a little. As the Shadow Imitation Technique forces the user to move in the same way as the bound, Shikamaru reels and informs Naruto that he is affected by what Naruto does to Gaara. Also knowing Gaara's power, Shikamaru tells Naruto not to act rash, but Naruto says that he has a real demon within him – he is not just acting it. Gaara then responds that his demon is just as real as Naruto's. Gaara reveals that he is the container for the incarnate of Sand, Shukaku, which was previously sealed in a tea kettle. Gaara's father, the Yondaime Kazekage, had imbued the Shukaku into Gaara, which should turn Gaara into Sunakagure's ultimate weapon. He did this right before Gaara was born; consequently, Gaara accidentally (or so it seems) killed his mother at birth because of this. However, after Gaara turned 6, eveyone in town felt he was too dangerous and a threat, and the Kazekage tried to assassinate Gaara numerous times right up even six years later (this also included his uncle, which seemed to be the final thing that turned him completely brutal). Gaara felt he failed his purpose to be the saviour of his people and eventually concluded that his purpose in life is to kill everybody around him, and that somebody without a reason to live was as good as dead. Gaara then stated that the correct path was to love yourself and nobody else – not even your family (some of which he stated he would rather kill. The precise text was 'The only emotional ties I have with my family, are the ones I'd like to wrap around their necks. They are only ties of hate.'
When Gaara tells them his story Naruto relates to it, saying they are both alike, but Gaara had to find his own answer (which resulted in what Gaara is now) when Naruto had Iruka-sensei (or a true form of love). Naruto knew then that if he didn't have that he might just be like Gaara.
It may seem at the time that Shikamaru has lost his chakra and control of Gaara, but it's Gaara's power that allows him to move his sand, Shikamaru is confused on how he can do that when he is shadow bound. Naruto is scared stiff and cannot protect himself from the incoming sand. Shikamaru, panicing also, yells at Naruto to move. As Gaara is about to kill them, he cries, "Now, let me feel alive!" Then Guy suddenly appears, telling them that it is enough. They don't want to waste their chakra right before the final exams. Gaara's sand retreats back into his gourd, and Gaara has the same flashback of his uncle that tormented him at the beginning before he heads for the doorway. However, Gaara pauses and tells them that he will eventually kill them all.
[edit] Trivia
- This is the first time that we are introduced to another Jinchuriki.
- This is the second time we've seen Naruto with a look of terror.
- Gaara understood immediately what Naruto meant when Naruto said that there was a real demon within him. Shikamaru was present to hear it, but it is inconclusive if Shikamaru was able to draw the right conclusion. However, since he will also see Naruto using the Demon fox's chakra against Neji in the next few episodes, and the fact that he has an IQ over 200, he likely figured it out.
- The symbol on Gaara's forehead is a chinese word which means "love".
