Bionicle: the Game is an action-adventure video game released in 2003. The game is based on the movie Bionicle: Mask of Light and other parts of the Bionicle storyline, but the game not actually based on the film. Initially, the game was supposed to make each Toa, Toa Nuva, and the Toa of Light playable, but due to deadlines, much of the game was dropped. However, you can play as all the characters in the Game Boy Advance version.

[edit] Story

The game follows the 2001-2003 storyline with only one obvious omission; the first part of the 2001 story, when the Toa first face Makuta, was cut out. However, many parts of the story were "reduced." The game begins when the Bohrok are attacking Mata Nui, and spends two levels depicting Tahu and Kopaka's battles with them. After that, the game moves on to Gali Nuva's level, in which the Bohrok Kal are introduced, and all defeated at once by Gali. In reality, Tahu Nuva uses the Kanohi Vahi, mask of time, to allow himself and the other five Toa to defeat them. Pohatu's level then depicts a "midpoint" between storylines; Pohatu is delivering the news that the Rahkshi have awakened to Onua. Onua then defeats Lerahk in his level by droping a generator on Lehrak, Lewa fights Panrahk in his level, and Tahu lava-surfs after Kurahk, who has made off with the Mask of Light. When he catches Kurahk, the Mask of Light fuses itself to Takua, who becomes Takanuva and defeats Makuta, lord of shadows, in the game's final level. The Turaga and Matoran only make a couple appearanaces, none of which are very significant to the plot.

[edit] Levels

The game consists of eight levels, within each the player must accomplish a series of tasks as they travel through various regions of Mata Nui. Some tasks include: Collecting lightstones, rescuing Matoran, defeating bosses, etc.

[edit] Level One: Toa Tahu

In this level Tahu, spirit of fire has to rescue Matoran which have been stranded in different parts of Ta-koro. The matoran are needed to call the Rahi which help Tahu get to the lair of the six deadly Bohrok

[edit] Level Two: Toa Kopaka

Kopaka must rescue Matoran as he slides down Mount Ihu on his shield. Once he reaches Ko-Koro, he must chase a Gahnok. However, a giant snowball chases him! Eventually Kopaka disables the Bohrok by zapping it with his shield then shooting it with elemental blasts. Note: Press 'Special' to look use mask of vision (first-person view).

[edit] Level Three: Toa Nuva Gali

Gali Nuva traverses all over Ga-Wahi in search of missing Matoran. Some Matoran are trapped in mysterious Dark Energy Cages, which can only be dissipated by a powerful Nuva blast. To open, recharge until you get your energy full. Quickly press 'Special'. She ends up fighting all six Bohrok-Kal solo.

[edit] Level Four: Toa Nuva Pohatu

Pohatu Nuva is trapped with a Matoran in a mine tunnel and must find six keys to unlock six door panels to escape. In Pohatu's level, you can replenish elemental energy by collecting "elemental energy spheres."

[edit] Level Five: Toa Nuva Onua

Onua Nuva must track down the Rahkshi Lerahk who has ended up in his domain. After passing through Onu-Wahi, he must destroy the shield that Lerahk hides behind. To do so, push rocks into at least 5/6 of Lerahk's energy valves. This will stop the flow of energy and drop a pipe (the Lehrak runs on 6 pipes).

[edit] Level Six: Toa Nuva Lewa

Lewa Nuva must find the Rahkshi that is hiding in the swamps, but first he must find Matoran to activate the Suva so he can get there. Once his Matoran activate his Suva, he can use his glider wings to fly across Le-Wahi.

[edit] Level Seven: Toa Nuva Tahu

Tahu Nuva must chase down a Rahkshi that has stolen the Mask of Light by surfing on an enormous river of lava!

[edit] Level Eight: Toa Takanuva

Takanuva must fight Makuta, defeating many Rahi that spawn near him. Eventually, the battle chamber falls to pieces and they must battle in free fall!

[edit] Inconsistencies

There are a number of elements in Bionicle: the Game which aren't reminiscent with the actual Bionicle storyline.

  • When Panrahk is defeated, it drops a Krana, rather than a Kraata. Krana are what give life to Bohrok, not Rahkshi.
  • Gali pronounces Lewa as "LOO-wuh". The correct pronunciation is "LEE-wuh".
  • Takanuva can't fly. Canonically, Takanuva doesn't even get close to flight.
  • Vorahk, Turahk, and Guurahk aren't mentioned. Canonically, they were in existence and were defeated at the Kini Nui; Guurahk and Vorahk by the six Toa Nuva, and Turahk by Takanuva.
  • The Toa Mata become Toa Nuva by collecting eight Krana. In canon, they became Nuva when they fell through energized protodermis.
  • Infected Rahi fight alongside the Bohrok and Rahkshi. In canon, they never fought together.
  • Takua finds the Avohkii when the Toa Nuva were Toa Mata. Canonically, he found it after the Bohrok Kal were defeated and the Toa Mata were Toa Nuva.
  • Kurahk stole the Avohkii. In the canon timeline, no Rahkshi even touched it.
  • Suva can be used to teleport. Canonically, suva can't teleport.
  • Gali fought all six Bohrok Kal, alone, in Ga-Wahi. The Bohrok Kal were defeated when the Toa Nuva used their symbols to feed the Bohrok Kal so much power that they were destroyed by it, in the canon timeline.
  • Onua fought Lerahk, alone, in Onu-Wahi. Lerahk (and the other Rahkshi, excluding Turahk) was canonically defeated by all six Toa Nuva at the Kini Nui.
  • Lewa fought Panrahk, alone, in Le-Wahi. See above for explanantion.
  • Tahu fought Kurahk, alone, in Ta-Wahi. See above for explanantion.
  • Rahi can be built at suva. In canon, rahi are wild animals that can't be built.
  • All the Toa shoot the same attacks. Each of the Toa in this game actually have different elements.
  • The Rahkshi arrive right after the Bohrok Kal are defeated. They canonically arrived 1-3 weeks after. As the game was not a RPG a space of 1-3 weeks can not pass by when the game is set into levels.
  • The Avohkii attaches itself to Takua's face in Ta-Wahi. Takua canonically puts it on at the Kini Nui.
  • The Matoran "worship" their Wahi's Toa. In the storyline, they are canonically regarded as heroes, not deities. Although in Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui there are statues of Toa Lhikan in the Great Temple, the Colisium Stadium, and Po-Metru Sculpture Fields.
  • The matoran live in "Wahi"s in the game, as opposed to "Koro." However the Koro are included in the game.
  • In this game Turaga Nuju can speak words but in the story line he uses the language of flying creatures.
  • In the game, all six (except Pohatu) toa have shielding powers. In the storyline, only Tahu had this mask power.
  • In the game, the toa had their elemental abilities during the fight with the Bohrok Kal.
