Spoiler Warning: Plot details and more are given away in this section.
Abdel, the giant son of Bhaal himself is with two companions, fleeing the wrath of Bhaal, or at least, his children. There are five of these Bhaalspawn and the first they send out to destroy Abdel is Illasera.even though Abdel is immortal and has gone through the very fires of the Underworld, she seems to have arrows that can pierce his flesh and bring him immense pain. She also has the ability to turn wolves and other creatures of the night dark so that they are attuned to Abdel, resulting in an attack on Abdel and his friends. They still kill the wolves, however. When he is attacked he is pierced by these arrows that have evil Runes carved into the sides. He must release the power of Bhaal inside him to defeat Illasera and save his friends. Word of Illasera's defeat spreads to the four remaining Bhaalspawn. Also Sarevok, slightly later in the novel, is resurrected. Sarevok had previously killed one of Abdel's friends, making him reluctant, but Sarevok helps them and seems quite sincere. At the beginning of the novel, however, it emphasizes that Bhaalspawn are killed without mercy, and many are slaughtered, which the author describes in considerably gory detail, even compared to the videogame.
