[edit] Synopsis
Visiting a commerce planet to restock and aid Rygel's flu symptoms, Crichton is lured into the realm of Maldis, a sorcerer who feeds off his victims' feelings of hatred and anger. Maldis also transports Crais—who has just been ordered to quit pursuing Moya and Crichton by Peacekeeper Command—and sets up a violent battle between them, feeding off the conflict. He inflames Crais' pain and desire to seek revenge by recreating memories of his past and all that he has lost in Tauvo's death. Crichton, however, hopes that by explaining that Tauvo's death was an accident, he and Crais can make peace.
With D'Argo and Aeryn unable to aid Crichton on the physical plane, Zhaan must use the guidance of a local former shaman, Liko. She must re-learn how to fight and give pain, endangering all the training she went through as a Pa'u in which she turned her back on violence and anger. She inflicts pain on Rygel as a test. This re-opens a door in Zhaan that she is not sure she can close again. Crichton, meanwhile, realizes that reason won't work on Crais, and he takes the radical step of trying for the first time to kill someone. Just before he succeeds in killing Crais, however, Maldis transports Crais back to his Command Carrier where, newly enraged, he destroys Peacekeeper Command's orders to return, kills faithful Lieutenant Teeg, and re-dedicates himself to killing Crichton.
Zhaan, Liko, and John, working together, are able to defeat Maldis, dispersing his energy for a time. But the battle is too much for Liko, and he dies.
