Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been the Minister for Education in Singapore since August 12, 2004. He is a member of the Cabinet of Singapore and a Member of Parliament representing Jurong GRC. In 2002, he was appointed to the Central Executive Committee of the PAP. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He obtained undergraduate and masters degrees in Economics from the London School of Economics and Cambridge University respectively, and another masters degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. He is of Sri Lankan Tamil ancestry. He is married to Jane Yumiko Ittogi, a lawyer. They have four children.
