[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The sisters' estranged father returns to their lives at last, causing mixed reactions among the girls. Somebody is trying to steal the Book of Shadows, and the timing of it makes the girls suspect that it is their father. But it turns out that the ones truly behind it are the new neighbors, who are actually shape-shifters. Meanwhile, a handsome handyman Leo Wyatt comes to the manor to help the girls fix up the house. As soon as the sisters feel like they're getting close to their father again, he leaves without saying goodbye, just leaving a video of them at Christmas when they were young.

[edit] Enemies

  • Shapeshifters: These demons are low level as we find out later in the show. They can change into anybody or anything they want, but seem to have their own identity. Marshall, Fritz and Cynda are the Shapeshifter demons who attempt to steal the book of Shadows to take command of its power. They're able to shift into any form regardless of body mass, but unlike most demons that we see later in the series, are apparently unable to shimmer.

[edit] Spells

  • To Protect The House: In the circle that is home, safety's gone and evils roam. Rid all beings from our walls, save sisters three now heed our call.

[edit] Artifacts

  • Ring of Protection: The setting is quite old, at least 17th century. The stones are chrysolite, which the Egyptians believed would protect them against spells, curses, and evil spirits. The stones are set in twos, the symbol of duality (man and woman) and again, protection.

[edit] Trivia

  • When Piper freezes everyone in the restaurant, the flame on the dessert flickers before everything else unfreezes
  • When Prue finds Andy in the house there is someone in the other room who shouldn't be there
  • This episode is the first to show Leo Wyatt
  • In this episode, the sisters’ father was billed as "Victor Halliwell", but we learn in That '70s Episode that "Halliwell" is the sisters’ mother’s name. The father’s name is "Victor Bennett". Also, this is the only episode featuring Tony Denison as Victor, James Read takes over the role in all future appearances.
  • This episode marks the first evidence that the Book of Shadows isn't simply filled with magical information, but it is also magical in itself. In this episode it seems like the Book of Shadows can turn its pages on its own, though the sisters realize in Witch Trial that Grams' spectral form is flipping them. Also, the Manor prevents it from being carried across the doorway by anybody that's not family.
  • Although the Shapeshifting Demons are able to carry the Book of Shadows to the Manor's doorway in this episode, in future episodes, it is explained that no evil being can physically hold the book at all, but this is probably because that the Charmed Ones have gotten stronger through time.
  • We see the first glimpse of the Charmed Ones' mother Patty in this episode. Her brief appearance shown in a past family video and photographs is portrayed by actress Alyssa Milano who normally plays Phoebe.
  • Given Phoebe's age in the Christmas home movie, this must have taken place December 25, 1976, meaning that Patty was about a few weeks pregnant with Paige at the time of the filming. However, this does not make sense later on in the series as it is explained Victor left Patty before Phoebe was even born.
  • Piper says that the Craft is only practiced by women of the family. This later changes as Piper is the first witch in the family to bear a male offspring, Wyatt Halliwell (and then two years later, Chris Halliwell). Grams said in the Season 5 episode Necromancing the Stone that in the last three hundred years beginning with the birth of Melinda Warren, the family has only produced females.
  • The pages of the Book of Shadows are different than the ones that are shown now. Also there are of repitions of a woodcut page.
  • Phoebe has her sixth premonition in this episode about her father taking the Book of Shadows.
  • Phoebe has her seventh premonition in this episode about her father taking the Book of Shadows, but then shapeshifting into Marshall.
  • Phoebe gets a new car, an electric blue 1992 Suzuki Sidekick Convertible.
  • After this episode Victors Protection Ring is never seen or mentioned again; even when he shows up again in "We All Scream For Ice Cream"
