"Thank You" was the second single by Dido, which was released in June 2001. It is the singer's biggest hit off her debut album, No Angel. Samples from the track were featured on the song "Stan" by Eminem; a rare example of a song becoming a hit after a track which sampled it did.

[edit] Chart performance

"Thank You" reached a peak position of #3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Dido's first, and only so far, top five single in the United States.

In the UK Singles Chart, "Thank You" also reached a peak position of #3, becoming the singer's second top five single released off No Angel in the United Kingdom. It was Dido's biggest single in the UK, until "White Flag" was released.

After it became the biggest hit single for Dido in both countries, the song is often recognized as her signature song, as mentioned by J.D. on the Scrubs "My Common Enemy" episode.

[edit] Cover versions

  • In 2002, Mexican group Flans, recorded "Gracias", a spanish version of the song. Was released as the third single from the album "Hadas".
  • In 2005, Italian artist Flexter released a Euro House cover of the song.

[edit] Music video

Dido recorded a music video for her song "Thank You". In the video, Dido hasn't paid her bills, and the government comes to tear down her house. The construcion workers put an eviction notice on her door and move her things out. Dido, who is partly oblivious to the fact that her house has been barricaded, is simply singing the song. In the end, she is escorted out of her home and is forced to walk the streets of London with a backpack and suitcases in tow.

The end of the video implies that her house is being torn down because it was built before the big city district was built (her home is sandwiched between two large skyscrapers).

[edit] Trivia

  • Dido wrote this song herself as a tribute to her boyfriend Bob, they got engaged in 2001 but this engagement did not last long and they broke apart next year. She also wrote song "White Flag" for their split in her second album Life For Rent.
  • "Thank You" song was initially released as single, later on it was included in her debut album No Angel.
  • "Thank You" made its first appearance in 1998, in the soundtrack of Sliding Doors, although it only became a hit three years later.
  • Snoop Dogg also sampled "Thank You" on his song "Round Here" from his 2006 album, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. The song was produced by Dr. Dre, who also sampled the song for Eminem's track "Stan".
