Thalangara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thalanagara is a predominantly Muslim area of Kasaragod, the district headquarters of the district with the same name.
It is most famous for housing the Malik Deenar Jama Masjid and dargah, where Malik Deenar, an Islamic missionary who brought Islam to the South-west coast of India during the lifetime of Muhammad.
The area is dependent on money sent home from ex-pat workers and most of the families in Thalangara will have a few family members working in the Persian Gulf, particularly Dubai. Although all the coveniences of modern living can be found in most homes, you could be forgiven for identifying no difference between a picture of the main thoroughfare taken two or three decades back and today.
The major areas of Thalangara are Padinhar, Kunnil, Kadavath ( literally means Ferry Stand) and Theruvath. The areas of Thalangara consist of smaller mohallas ( localities) and each locality has its own mosque and madrassa. Most of the people are conservative and take religious education quite seriously. There are some great views of the Arabian sea from the Malik Deenar masjid that lies atop a hill.
Talangara also houses the oldest and the biggest hospital, The Malik Dinar Charitable Hospital of kasargod district, which was established in 1970 by Janab KS Abdullah.
