Tha Carter is a 2004 rap album by American rapper Lil Wayne.

Tha Carter preceded Lil Wayne's work in Tha Drought mixtape and Tha Prefix mixtape, where he freestyled over The Black Album. Tha Carter peaked at number five of the 2004 Billboard 200, and at number two of the Billboard magazine Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. A separate version of the album, "The Screwed and Chopped" version was produced by Michael 5000 Watts of Swishahouse.

[edit] Meaning of the title

In the 1991 film New Jack City, "tha Carter" is the name of Nino Brown's efficient crackhouse. In relation to the album, "tha Carter" is interpreted as Lil Wayne's building, crackhouse, or castle as a physical symbol for Lil Wayne's dynasty. He makes numerous references throughout tha Carter, such as the beginning of Track 6, "I Miss My Dawgs", where he states "..in my building, I must keep it real...". "Carter" is also an obvious pun on Lil Wayne's last name. It should also be noted that "tha Carter" was released under the Cash Money Records label and Nino Brown and his clique in New Jack City was known as the CMB or Cash Money Brothers.
