Text2Speech is an Open Source, Speech Synthesis program. Development of Text2Speech began in 2005 using the Visual Basic programming language. Development stopped for almost a year before a complete C# rewrite of the program was made. After several successful BETA releases the first stable version of Text2Speech was released in November 2006. Despite Version 1.0 being "stable" 2 bug fixing releases were released in the following 2 months. The third update version 1.0.3 was released by Ilexis Software on 11 January 2006.

Ilexis Software recently announced that Version 1.2 of Text2Speech would be the biggest update yet, implementing a wealth of new features. The original release date for the software was the 9th of February 2007, but due to development problems it was not released until Friday the 16th of February.

Version 1.2.0.5 of Text2Speech was released on Sunday the 18th of February 2007, featuring "a massive amount of bug fixes/patches and several new features, including XML file support"

Recently the developers said that the long awaited version 1.2.1.0 was "not far off" and should be released in "the next few days"[1]. Version 1.2.1.0 was finally released on the 21st of March 2007.

[edit] Microsoft Office add-on

The developers have recently announced they are looking into developing an add-on for Microsoft Office 2007. Not many details have been released, but Bobbocanfly Software said that the add-on will act very much like the standard application but will tie in with Microsoft Word.

Bobbocanfly Software also say that if the Word add-on is successfully developed and released they will look into add-ons for other products in the Microsoft Office family.

Bobbocanfly Software say they have started developing it, but nothing else has been said and nothing has been released.

[edit] Text2Speech CE

At the start of January 2007 Ilexis said they were looking into developing a version of Text2Speech for Windows CE Mobile Operating System, but in a more recent press release, they said that it is unlikely that the project will be developed any further, due to lack of Text To Speech support on hardware that supports CE.

[edit] Other Extras

Bobbocanfly software say they are developing several small "extras" which will be included in future versions of the main software. Some of these extras include a small SDK which will include a C# class with all the code needed to add speech into an application.

They are also developing a console/text (non GUI) ba.sed version of Text2Speech. This is due to the fairly high system requirements that need to be fulfiled to run the GUI version of Text2Speech.
