State Highway Loop 49, is a highway loop that will encircle the city of Tyler, Texas upon completion. It will be an outerloop tollway connecting with Interstate 20 in the west near Lindale, Texas and the east near Winona, Texas.
Loop 49 began life as a planned freeway, but the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NET RMA) chose to build the highway as a tollway with an electronic toll system.
Construction began in August 2003 on a five mile segment starting at SH 155 in Noonday, Texas south of Tyler, east to US 69 (S Broadway Ave) in south Tyler. Grand opening of Segment 1 took place on August 17th, 2006. Tolling began on November 27, 2006. Construction is in progress on Segment 2, extending approximately 2.0 miles from US 69 east to FM 756 (Paluxy Dr), with completion expected by December 2007. A request for qualifications for engineering services has been released for Section 3B, the longest section of the toll road, which extends 10.4 miles from SH 31 west of Tyler, north to I-20.
