State Highway 23, or SH 23, runs from the Texas-Oklahoma boundary north of Booker to 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Canadian in the Texas panhandle. It was originally signed (but not officially designated) concurrent with FM 1265 in 1959 "for guidance of the travelling public", as it continued into Oklahoma as OK 23. It was officially designated at SH 23 in 1990, cancelling FM 1265.

Historic Texas SH 23

SH 23 was one of the original 26 state highways proposed in 1917, with a route from Olney to Mason. Construction was slow, with only small portions built by 1922. By 1933, the highway had been rerouted on the northern and southern ends. It now would travel north through Vernon along the under construction U.S. Route 283, while the southern end was diverted westward at Coleman, now ending at San Angelo. By 1939, the route had been retired, being absorbed by U.S. 283, U.S. Route 67, and SH 206.

Historic Texas SH 23A

SH 23A was an alternate route of SH 23 between Albany and Cross Plains. The alternate route was the eastern path, via Cisco, while the main route was the west path through Baird. By 1933, the alternate route had been redesignated as the main route of SH 23A
