[edit] Route
The highway starts by branching off of Interstate 35 in Burleson. It runs in a generally north-to-south direction through Johnson County. Once leaving Johnson County, the highway enters the northwest corner of Hill County. It curves to the west, and goes in a southwest direction into Bosque County. It ends with an intersection with State Highway 22 in Meridian.
[edit] Previous routes
The original routing of SH 174 ran from Cleburne southwest via Walnut Springs to Iredell. SH 174 was rerouted to its current designation in 1952, replacing State Highway 353, while the old route was transferred to FM 927 and Park Road 21.
