Territorial Court of Yukon

The Territorial Court of Yukon is the territorial court for the Canadian territory of Yukon.

The Territorial Court deals with most adult Criminal Code prosecutions and most other federal statutes. The Territorial Court also hears Youth Criminal Justice Act violations by young offenders under Territorial laws. It also deas with first appearances, bail hearings, receiving pleas of guilty and not guilty, trials and sentencing, in both summary conviction and indictable matters, and conducts preliminary inquiries.

The Territory has exclusive jurisdiction over child protection but limited jurisdiction over family matters.

[edit] Structure of the Court

The Court consists of three full-time judges and approximately 15 deputy judges who are full-time or retired judges from other jurisdictions. While the Court sits permanently in the territorial capital of Whitehorse, it also provides services to fourteen other communities.
