Terrapene Ornata Ornata, or ornate box turtle, is one of the two different sub-species of the ornate box turtle, Terrapene ornata.

It is found across the Great Plains of the United States, although because they are common in the pet srade, may be found outside of their home range during warmer months. They are often captured for the pet trade illegally, and as a result their numbers are in decline in many areas, Wisconsin being a well noted area of declining numbers, where they are labeled as an endangered species. Wild caught (WC) specimins often have internal parasites and bot flies, and because these turtles are noted for being susceptible to stress, often do not do well in captivity.
