Teri Bauer is a fictional character played by Leslie Hope as part of the television series, 24, who was the wife of the main character, Jack Bauer.
[edit] Biography
Teri Bauer was the wife of Federal Agent Jack Bauer and the mother of Kim Bauer and an unborn child. She had a degree in fine arts, and worked as a commercial artist. Two years prior to Day 1, Jack and Teri separated with Jack moving out of their home, due to Jack becoming emotionally distant after his mission in Kosovo against Victor Drazen. During their separation, Teri began seeing Phil Parslow while Jack had an affair with his co-worker Nina Myers. Though Teri knew Jack had been involved with someone during their separation, she did not learn it was Nina until midway though Day 1. Jack and Teri eventually reconciled and Jack moved back home.
[edit] Day 1
The season begins with Teri and Kim at odds with each other, with Kim trying to play Jack against Teri. Jack and Teri, however, decide that if Kim insults one of them, she is insulting both of them, and decide to talk with her. However, Kim has already snuck out of the house with Janet York. As Jack is called into CTU to combat the conspiracy to assassinate presidential candidate Senator David Palmer, Teri goes off to search for Kim by herself, along with Alan York.
Teri is initially unaware of the danger her daughter is in, but suspects something is wrong when Kim, ordered by her kidnappers to tell her mother that she is at a party, says worriedly, "I love you...," at the end of the conversation. A later phone call by Kim after she escapes confirms that she has, in fact, been kidnapped. Teri and York go after them, but York is pulled over with speeding and is temporarily arrested for arguing with the police officer before he confirms their story. The delay causes them to miss Kim and Janet; Kim is recaptured while Janet is hit by a car and hospitalized. Teri and York go to the hospital to ask Janet some questions when she regains consciousness.
Teri is relieved when Jack arrives at the hospital and assures her he will not leave her side. Yet she is alarmed to learn that Kim may have been captured because of Jack's proximity to the hit on presidential candidate David Palmer.
When Jack suddenly disappears from the hospital, Teri accompanies York to track down an address that Janet had provided. As Teri drives with York, Nina calls, looking for Jack with important information. Nina gives her the name of a murder victim—Alan York—whom Gaines had killed and replaced with one of his men. Teri realizes that the man she is with is not actually York, and she is in great danger.
Knowing that York is not who he says he is, Teri pretends that she is sick to get out of the car. When York is alerted by Ira Gaines that Teri knows his real identity, he goes after her. Teri knocks him out with a rock and ties him up. She finally gets through to CTU, asking Jamey Farrell for help. Jamey sends out two men to locate her, but they reveal themselves to be working for Gaines; Jamey had been a traitor at CTU working for Gaines. They untie "York" and take Teri to the compound; when Kim sees that her mother has been captured, she aborts her escape attempt with Rick Allen.
Teri and Kim are used as leverage against Jack, and Gaines threatens to kill them if Jack fails to accomplish his goals or attempts to alert anyone. Teri suspects that she and Kim will be killed soon, and tells her daughter how much she loves her. After Gaines believes that Jack deliberately sabotaged his first attempt to kill Palmer, Teri and Kim are taken out to be shot, but are given a last minute reprieve by Gaines, who realizes that he needs them to get Jack to help with a second attempt on Palmer. When Eli Stram comes to take Kim away to rape her, Teri goes off with him instead to save her daughter, although she does not say what he did to her. While she is with him, Teri manages to steal a cell phone. Teri attempts to call Nina, and gives CTU clues to where she is being held captive, and they run a trace on where the call is originating, enabling them to narrow it down to an area. Although Teri hides the phone from Eli, he finds it and hangs up.
Some time later, Teri winces in pain, but assures her daughter that she is all right. Rick gives Teri a gun, and she shoots Eli when he comes in to kill her. She calmly fires a second shot to make it seem as if Eli killed the two women.
Teri is armed and ready when she hears someone come into the shed, but she is relieved that it is Jack. When he leaves to get the car, Teri is adamant about the three of them not separating. Rick brings one of Gaines' vans instead, and when they drive to the front gates, they are shot at. Jack makes Teri take Kim to safety in the nearby forest. While fleeing into the woods with Kim, Teri gets another stabbing pain in her stomach. Kim is worried for her mother, but Teri presses on. To avoid Gaines' men, they take another route to the water tower and get lost. Jack saves them from a sniper while they are hiding in a cabin. When Kim fears for the missing Rick, Teri urges her daughter to first fight for her own life. A CTU chopper picks up the Bauers and takes them to safety.
Teri admits to the doctor at the clinic that she was raped, but she asks that Jack not be told. When the doctor finds that Teri's stomach pains were caused by an ovarian cyst, she orders a pregnancy test as a precaution. Nina, sensing a threat to the women at the clinic, rushes them out to a safe house. Teri takes a pregnancy test that the doctor gave her, and is surprised to learn that she is pregnant. After she and Kim get over their initial shock, they are pleased with the news. Teri is initially reluctant, then eager to tell Jack, but he is not available to speak to her. While Nina interrogates her, Teri figures out that Nina was the one who Jack dated when they separated. When Jack calls, she does not tell him about her condition. With all of the new discoveries, she is uneasy on the phone with him.
While again being questioned by Nina, Teri is rattled by the recent discovery of Nina and Jack's affair. Nina turns her over to another agent for interrogation. Teri becomes overwhelmed with the emotional and physical stress of the day. But before she can rest, an assassin named Jovan Myovic comes to the safe house to kill her and Kim. Teri escapes with her daughter in an agency car.
After parking the car, Teri watches the car tumble over the cliff—with her daughter inside—and explode. Teri faints, and when she wakes up, she is disoriented and suffers from a slight case of amnesia caused by the traumatic experience. Teri accepts a ride from a motorist, and goes to a restaurant that she frequents. The owner, who knows her, puts her in touch with Phil Parslow, who reveals that he had wanted to have an affair to her, but that she wanted to stay with her husband. Although Parslow suggests that she go to a hospital, Teri instead asks to go home, as she is afraid of hospitals, but does not know why.
At home, she goes through photographs and her date book to try to jar her memory. Parslow brings a friend with a gun named Chris to protect Teri, but she is afraid of guns and becomes angry. She relents out of trust for Parslow. One of Drazen's assassins enters the house and shoots both Parslow and his friend. The assassin is about to shoot Teri, but Tony Almeida arrives to save her. The shock triggers Teri to remember what happened to Kimberly in the car crash, and Teri is distraught until Tony assures her that he spoke to Kim, who is alive and worried about her mother. Tony drives Dr. Parslow to the clinic, and takes Teri to CTU.
At CTU, Teri learns of ongoing events, and becomes increasingly insistent that Jack be rescued, to the point of being called a "basket case." Jack calls Teri at CTU to say that she will soon be reunited with Kim. He then has to cover when Teri asks about being reunited with him. Teri finally lets Jack know about her pregnancy, having been reluctant to do so before. He breaks down because he believes he is about to trade his own life to save Kimberly, but does not reveal this to Teri.
After learning that Jack has successfully defeated the terrorists and that both he and Kim are on their way back to CTU, Teri goes looking for Nina Myers, to tell her the good news (not knowing that Nina had lied to Jack about Kim's death, and feared that she would be exposed). She, however, encounters Nina in the middle of her escape from CTU and notices a pool of blood on the ground from the body of a custodian whom Nina had killed. Nina binds Teri to the chair, completes the removal of the data she needs, and tells Teri that someone will find her.
When Jack re-enters CTU headquarters after Nina Myers is arrested, he looks for Teri. He finds her in the room where she had been tied up, dead from a gunshot wound; unbeknownst to him and the viewer, Nina had shot her off-screen. The final moments of the first season show flashbacks of Jack and Teri, and a silent clock is shown.
Jack was so distraught about this incident that he became inactive from CTU for 18 months, only returning after a request by President David Palmer.
