Teresa Żylis-Gara

Teresa Żylis-Gara (born January 23, 1930 in Lentvaris) is a Polish soprano singer.

She studied at Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Muzyczna in Łódź. She was a laureate of 3rd award at the International Music Contest in Munich (1960) and a laureate of the Polish Young Vocalists Contest in Warsaw. She is a honoris causa doctor of Karol Lipiński University of Music (2003).

In 1956 she made her debut at Opera and Philharmonic in Kraków as the eponymous character in Stanisław Moniuszko's Halka. Winning at the International Music Contest in Munich allowed her to perform in German operas in Oberhausen, Dortmund and Düsseldorf. In 1966 she performed at the Paris Opéra. In 1968 Żylis-Gara sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and Covent Garden in London. In 1970s she was a soloist at La Scala in Milan, Teatr Wielki in Warsaw and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. She also performed in operas in Buenos Aires, Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, Chicago.

She has settled in Monaco.
